NCU TO CONFER HONORARY DEGREES

Northern Caribbean University (NCU) will confer the honorary degrees of Doctor of Science and Doctor of Humane Letters on Dr E. Albert Reece and the Honourable Lascelles Chin respectively, during the institution’s graduation exercises to be held on Sunday, August 14.
Dr Reece and Mr Chin will be recognized by the University, for the invaluable contributions they have made in their respective fields.
Dr Reece, who will speak at the first of two Commencements, is the Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland. Dr Reece, a native of Jamaica, is also the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and professor in the departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medicine, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and is a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr Reece is actively involved in research and education and directs a multimillion dollar research laboratory focussing on the bio-molecular mechanisms of diabetes-induced birth defects and has published extensively in scientific literature.
The Honourable Lascelles A. Chin OJ is the second Commencement speaker. Mr Chin is the Founder and Executive Chairman of the LASCO Affiliated Companies and is a highly esteemed Jamaican entrepreneur and outstanding philanthropist.

Among the numerous accolades received by Mr Chin for his remarkable contribution to the development of society, are: The International Federation Association of Consuls Medal of Distinction Award; the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) and the Order of Jamaica; MoneyGram Brand Ambassador for Jamaica; induction into the Private Sector of Jamaica’s Hall of Fame and the Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of Technology.
The Commencements are a culmination of a weekend of events which will begin on Friday, August 12, with a Consecration Service held for the graduands. On Saturday, August 13, the Baccalaureate Service will be held followed by the Nurses’ Pinning Ceremony.
